Bitcoin's halving in April could force crypto miners to sell some tokens, Kaiko Research reported. These firms haven't yet had to tap their bitcoin hoards thanks to high transaction fees, but that could change. The April halving is a pre-coded event in which the amount of bitcoin rewarded to crypto miners is slashed in half. According to Bloomberg, fees jumped amid a burst of meme-coin creation after the halving event. Miners are often known for hoarding bitcoin troves without selling, which analysts have previously pointed out as another price-boosting supply constraint.

Meme stocks are back, and the mania is actually spreading far beyond GameStop and AMC Entertainment . The latest frenzy was triggered by a single post on social media site X from "Roaring Kitty," the man who inspired the epic meme stock mania in 2021. Quiver Quantitative , an alternative data analytics firm, looked to find all the meme stocks that are popular among the Reddit traders. A few names associated with the artificial intelligence boom also became popular meme stocks, including voice AI and speech recognition company SoundHound AI , AI IT services firm BigBear.ai and Super Micro Computer , a maker of servers. Other under-the-radar meme names included B. Riley Financial, Spirit Airlines , Tilray Brands and Smart for Life.

GameStop and fellow meme stock AMC Entertainment are each up more than 160% over the past two days. "This isn't 2021 when the world was locked down and awash with liquidity," said Antoni Trenchev, cofounder of crypto exchange Nexo. To be sure, there's a world of cryptocurrencies beyond bitcoin that includes meme coins. Noelle Acheson, economist and author of the "Crypto is Macro Now" newsletter, added that the meme stock run was "more of a revving of engines than a full take-off" and that macro issues are still pressuring bitcoin. Sylvia Jablonski, CEO and chief investment officer at Defiance ETFs, added that although bitcoin was "lumped into the meme stock category" in 2021, the market is starting to show signs of being taken more seriously now.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen delivers remarks at the Treasury Department's Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States conference at the Treasury Department in Washington, DC, on September 14, 2023. U.S. President Joe Biden issued an order on Monday forcing a Chinese-backed cryptocurrency mining company to sell land near a Wyoming nuclear missile base, citing national security concerns. The company, MineOne, acquired the real estate in June 2022, placing its operations within a mile of the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, a "strategic missile base and key element of America's nuclear triad," according to the White House. The company's site contained "specialized and foreign-sourced equipment potentially capable of facilitating surveillance and espionage activities," the presidential order said. MineOne was ordered to divest from the land in the next 120 days, and to remove certain improvements and equipment at the property.

Major indexes were slightly higher after the data as investors assessed the impact on rate cut outlooks. April's producer price index data beat estimates, gaining 0.5% for the month against 0.3% consensus estimates. The PPI data comes a day before Wednesday's consumer price index and will give investors a broader frame of reference. If CPI data is equally hot, the stuttering stock rally could face even more negative consequences. The 10-year Treasury briefly topped 4.5% after the PPI data before slipping by about one basis point to 4.465.

But after a decade of doing that, iPhone sales are slowing, revenue is down, and the company, again, needs to find its next big thing. Apple's own outlook suggests poor iPhone sales will persist, especially as sales in China rapidly decline. The drawbacks of Cook's divestment from product design and development are now becoming clearer. Both the EU and the US cases would also make some people more likely to switch to a cheaper phone, which would threaten iPhone sales even further. Read previewOne sign we're in a crypto revival: Crypto prices are roaring again. Another sign: Crypto companies are advertising on TV again. Crypto.com isn't the only one pushing crypto on TV again. It makes perfect sense to run it side-by-side with ads telling you how fun it would be to bet on the very game you're watching (unless you're an NBA player). All that said, the 2024 crypto revival still seems more like an echo of the last boom than a replay.

De-dollarization efforts won't do much to dethrone the dollar, Morgan Stanley said. There are no true alternatives to holding the US dollar at the moment, Morgan Stanley strategists said. AdvertisementThe dollar's status as the top currency of central banks and for international trade probably isn't fading soon, according to Morgan Stanley. "Now, reasonable people can disagree about whether cryptocurrencies are going to appreciate or depreciate, but I'd argue that the best outcome for a dominant currency is neither." Displacing a dominant currency is something that happens over the course of decades, economists previously told Business Insider, as it takes time for people to shift to other currencies once a dominant currency is recognized as "safe."
